Educational leaders must seek to understand both the strengths and limitations of Generative AI as it becomes increasingly integrated into classroom teaching and learning. While Gen AI can make learning more inclusive and support both teachers and students, it also presents challenges that require thoughtful consideration and ethical use.

Pros

Supports struggling and at-risk learners:
GenAI can provide extra practice, simplify content, and offer step-by-step explanations—especially crucial for students in Barbados who may not receive learning support outside the classroom.

Improves differentiation in mixed-ability classrooms:
Teachers can easily adjust materials based on students’ reading levels, interests, backgrounds, learning styles, and cognitive or physical abilities.

Reduces teacher workload:
GenAI can quickly generate tests, quizzes, lesson plans, draft emails, rubrics, and other tasks, giving teachers more time for instruction and meaningful student engagement.

Students gain access to an always-available, patient, and efficient “assistant” that can help with homework and reinforce classroom content.

GenAI may provide inaccurate information, so teachers and students must double-check facts and verify sources.

Potential for academic dishonesty:
Students may use AI to complete assignments without developing understanding, affecting mastery and long-term learning.

Educators require ongoing training to use GenAI confidently, effectively, ethically, and responsibly.

Privacy and data protection concerns:
Schools must ensure that students’ personal information remains protected and that AI tools meet data-safety standards.

Bias in AI outputs:

  1. I too agree with you on the use of Generative AI to bring about positive change in the educational system in Barbados. I also believe that students should he taught how to use Generative AI in a positive way rather than be used as a tool to encourage plagiarism and a fast way to complete tasks without doing the necessary research.
